SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University pole vaulters Cameron Daugherty and Julia Cain have been named PSAC Field Male and Female Athletes of the Week, respectively.
Both won their event at the Baldwin-Wallace Mid-February Meet, Cain matching her season-high vault of 12 feet. Daugherty topped the field at 16-6 feet.
SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University's women's lacrosse team has been picked to finish seventh out of 12 teams in the PSAC preseason coaches poll.SRU finshed 12-5 last year. West Chester, the national runner-up last season, is picked to win the conference, followed by Lock Haven, Bloomsburg, Mercyhurst, Gannon, Indiana and The Rock.SRU opens the season March 20 vs. Catawba College in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
SALEM, W.Va. — Point Park University's women's basketball team, coached by Butler graduate Tony Grenek, tied the school record of 21 wins in a season with a 78-56 victory at Salem International on Tuesday night.Butler graduate and Pioneer guard/forward Katresa Savisky scored nine points, grabbed five rebounds and three steals.Point Park (21-5, 10-4) will try to break the record Friday night when it hosts Carlow at 7:30 p.m.
DEERFIELD, Ill. — Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose still has no target date for his return from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, and he even indicated he might sit out the season.In an interview with USA Today, the three-time All-Star point guard said he's “far away” from being ready to play. Rose has been practicing and traveling with the team, but he has no specific timetable for a return from an injury he suffered in the playoffs last season.
PEORIA, Ariz. — Felix Hernandez and Seattle reached agreement on a contract that is expected to make the Mariners ace the highest-paid pitcher in baseball.Hernandez’s deal is expected to be for $175 million over seven years.
