The Butler YMCA swim team improved to 4-0 recently by defeating East Suburban Pittsburgh YMCA.

Butler’s squad won eight out of 10 age groups.

Top finishers in three different events for Butler included Laura Goettler, Amanda Noellert, Camryn Forbes, Abigail Jones, Kaelyn Emanuel, Taylor Campbell, David Bocci, Matthew Karenbauer and Ryan Deemer.

Styles, Franz in Fall Top 10Slippery Rock University distance runner Kara Styles and California (Pa.) University volleyball standout Meghan Franz, a Seneca Valley graduate, are among the PSAC Fall Top 10 honorees.The PSAC Top 10 recognizes 10 student-athletes for outstanding performances in athletics and academics.Styles, a graduate student, carries a 4.0 grade-point average and is in her second semester of graduate work in SRU’s doctor of physical therapy program. She was the No. 2 runner on The Rock’s cross country team, earning All-PSAC honors.Franz, a senior, has a 3.93 GPA and is completing a degree in secondary education with a concentration in biology. A four-year starter in volleyball, she led the PSAC and ranked 18th in the country with a career-high .363 hitting percentage. She owns the Vulcans’ record of 493 career blocks.

Pa. bear harvest 3rd highest everHARRISBURG — The Pennsylvania Game Commission has announced that hunters harvested 3,632 bears in the state in 2012, the third highest total ever.The record harvest in Pennsylvania was 4,350 bears in 2011. Second highest was 4,162 bears in 2005.There were 11 bears harvested in Butler County last year, 77 in Clarion County and only one in Mercer County.

SRU basketball gets national votesSLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock University men’s basketball team received votes for the NCAA Division II national poll Tuesday.This marks the first time The Rock received votes for the national poll since its 8-0 start on Dec. 23, 2009.SRU is 12-3 so far this year, tied for first in the PSAC West, and hosts California (Pa.) Wednesday night at Morrow Field House.

Grizzlies, Cavs agree to trade MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Grizzlies traded Marreese Speights, Wayne Ellington, Josh Selby and a future first-round draft pick Tuesday to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Jon Leuer.
