Music scholarships available
Blackwood music scholarships are available to high school students intending to pursue a career in instrumental music performance.
The scholarships are presented by the Blackwood Theater Organ Society, which was organized for the purpose of preserving the theater pipe organ and silent movies as forms of art. Concerts, featuring theater organists and vintage silent movies, are held annually at the Blackwood estate in Harrisville with the proceeds going towards the scholarships.
Scholarships and grants totaling $25,000, in varying amounts from $2,000 to $5,000, will be available for 2013.
Since 2000, 52 scholarships, totaling $176,000 have been awarded to high school seniors. Their instruments have spanned the spectrum, including harp, percussion, strings, brass, woodwinds, piano and organ.
Selected participants will be required to appear for a personal interview and audition before a panel of professional musicians of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
Applications must be postmarked no later than Feb. 1. Interested students may download the guidelines and application forms at www.blackwoodmusic.org.
