Jogger hit by truck, dies

Woman, 22, was college student

PINE TWP, Mercer County — A Grove City woman was killed Tuesday morning when a truck struck her while she jogged in this township just north of the Butler County line, state police said.

Megan M. Kays, 22, was jogging north on Airport Road about 10:05 a.m. and was attempting to cross over Route 58 when she was hit by a Peterbilt box truck traveling east on Route 58.

Police said the front of the truck hit Kays.

She was taken to the Grove City Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 10:40 a.m., police said. No autopsy was conducted.

Veronica L. Salusky, 27, of Emlenton, Venango County, who was driving the commercial truck, was not injured.

Trooper Donald Bookwalter said that while his investigation continues, it did not appear that Salusky was at fault. She was not speeding, he said.

The road was dry, the weather conditions were clear and there was not much traffic at the time of the accident, according to investigators.

Kays was a senior marketing major at Clarion (Pa.) University, and regularly attained dean’s list honors there.

Last year she was awarded the 2012 Marketing Department Scholarship based on academic achievement, said university spokesman Tina Horner.

Kays was a 2009 graduate of Grove City High School, where she was a standout on the school’s swimming team.
