FOXBURG — The A-C Valley competitive cheerleading team finished fourth in District 9 and has earned a berth in the state competition.The Falcon squad — coached by Stacey Fox and Jacqui Shook — finished behind St. Marys, Curwensville and Keystone.This is the first year competitive cheerleading is recognized as a sport by the PIAA.
SLIPPERY ROCK — Chris Davis, Clayton Master and Butler graduate Drew Donoghue are Slippery Rock University men's soccer players who earned All-Atlantic Region honors this season.Davis, a sophomore forward, was named second team all-region, as was senior goalkeeper Master. Donoghue, a senior defender, made third team.The Rock women had six all-region selections. Senior defender Emer Flatley, junior goalkeeper Dana O'Neill and senior forward Shelby Ward earned first-team honors. Sophomore forward Lucy Hannon was named second team, junior defender Lauren Impey and junior forward Izabel Scott accorded third-team honors.
ERIE — Butler graduate Jake Gamble, a senior forward on the Penn State-Behrend men's soccer team, has been named third-team NCAA Division III All-America.Gamble became the first Behrend player to ever earn a spot on the team. He set single-season team records of 24 goals and 48 points.Gamble was also named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Offensive Player of the Year and leaves Behrend as its all-time leading scorer with 59 goals and 133 points.
GROVE CITY — Grove City College junior cornerback Chris Gibbs has been named second-team NCAA Division III Academic All-America.Gibbs finished second on the Wolverines with 68 tackles and had six pass breakups. He owns a 3.92 grade point average as a molecular biology major.In other Wolverines news, senior offensive guard Josh Bermann was named third-team All-South Region from D3Football.com. He had previously earned first-team all-PAC.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Butler graduate and Winston-Salem State guard Nate Hartung has been named second team All-Super Region 1 by Daktronics, Inc.The No. 2-ranked Rams, 13-0, will compete in the NCAA D-II football semifinals Saturday.
