John D. Gibson Sr.
John D. Gibson Sr., 79, of Butler passed away at 1:40 p.m. Thursday at Sugar Creek Rest, Worthington.
He was born Aug. 14, 1933, in Callery to the late Frederick V. Gibson and Anna L. Snodgrass Gibson.
Mr. Gibson was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the PA National Guard. He worked in the silicon strip coating maintenance department at Butler Armco, retiring in 1995 after 44 years.
He was a former member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 73 Butler PA, where he was a boating safety instructor. He was a former skipper for the Sea Explorer Ship 10, which met at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church. Mr. Gibson was the operations officer and the liaison officer for the 1973 and 1977 National Boy Scout Jamboree held at Moraine State Park. He was a former member of the Bethany United Church of Christ and was a life member of the Portersville Steam Club.
Mr. Gibson is survived by two daughters, Anita Dean and her husband, Alfred, of Tuscon, Ariz., and Cathy Martin and her husband, Leslie, of Butler; two sons, John D. Gibson Jr. and his wife, Sheri, and Thomas V. Gibson and his fiancee, Robin Aufdencamp, all of Butler; one brother; Deacon Robert Steighner of Claremont, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Barbara Holt of Butler; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian I. Olson Gibson, who he married Sept. 8, 1952 and who passed away Dec. 25, 2008; one son, William Gibson; three sisters; and one brother.
GIBSON — Friends of John D. Gibson Sr., who died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012, will be received Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E.
