WARRENDALE — Max Master netted three goals and Craig Mazzotta added two more as the Mars hockey team fought back from a 3-1 first-period deficit en route to an 8-6 victory over Thomas Jefferson Tuesday in PIHL Class A action at BladeRunners in Warrendale.

Ed Schwadron tallied a goal and two assists, Nick Makozy and Owen Vasbinder each had a goal and assist, while Mike McCann recorded one assist, all for the Planets.

Mars (4-2) returns to the ice Tuesday at Bishop McCort.

Former SRU coach joins Clarion staff CLARION — Former Slippery Rock University women’s basketball coach Laurel Heilman has been named interim assistant coach of the same sport at Clarion University.Heilman replaces Bert DeSalvo, who stepped down for personal reasons earlier this month.Heilman will work with Clarion head women’s coach Gie Parsons. Both played basketball at SRU and have known each other for 20 years.Heilman won 219 games in an 18-year collegiate coaching career at Allegheny College and SRU. She was 110-149 in 10 years as coach of The Rock, including three PSAC playoff berths.Parsons is the winningest coach in Clarion women’s basketball history with a 330-206 record. The Golden Eagles are 2-1 this year and host Shippensburg and Millersville this weekend.

NFL great Pardee ill with cancer HOUSTON — The family of former Houston Oilers coach Jack Pardee says the NFL defensive great has been diagnosed with gall bladder cancer and has six to nine months to live.

49ers, Bowman reach extension SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers and inside linebacker NaVorro Bowman have reached agreement on a five-year contract extension through the 2018 season.With Bowman's new deal, it keeps one of the best and most-feared linebacking tandems in the NFL together for the long haul — as fellow inside linebacker Patrick Willis is signed through 2016.The 24-year-old Bowman, a third-round draft pick in 2010 out of Penn State, has 100 tackles, two sacks and an interception this season as a second-year starter for the NFC West-leading Niners (8-2-1). As a rookie, his 20 special-teams tackles ranked third in the NFL.

Ward, Pavlik agree to fight in January LOS ANGELES — Super middleweight champion Andre Ward will defend his WBC and WBA belts against former middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik on Jan. 26 at the Galen Center in downtown Los Angeles.Ward's promoter, Dan Goossen, announced the bout Tuesday.Ward (26-0, 14 KOs) is among the world's top handful of pound-for-pound fighters, with a perfect career since winning a gold medal at the Athens Olympics. The fighter from Oakland, Calif., will make his sixth title defense against Pavlik after stopping Chad Dawson in September.
