Clair Gardner

Clair W. Gardner, 85, of Slippery Rock passed away at 6:20 a.m. Tuesday at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

He was born April 4, 1927, in Butler County and was the son of the late X.H. Gardner and the late Bertha (Stevenson) Gardner.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy (Anderson) Gardner, who he married Aug. 13, 1948; a daughter, Deborah (James) Garrison of Hudson, Ohio; three sons, Dennis (Dr. Pamela) Gardner of Lima, Ohio, Donald (Luanne) Gardner of Rock Hill, S.C., and Kevin (Mary) Gardner of Fayetteville, Pa.; seven grandchildren, Todd (Rebecca) Gardner, Claire and Andrew Gardner, Brian and Jennifer Gardner, Greg (Kim) Garrison and Kaitlyn Garrison; a sister, Wilhelmina Miller of Coaltown; and several nieces and nephews.

Clair retired from Armco Steel in 1988 after 41 years. He was a longtime member of the Mount Chestnut United Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder, choir member, youth leader and Sunday school teacher. After moving, he became a member of the Slippery Rock United Methodist Church. He also was a Boy Scout leader.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post 393, Victory Lodge 694 and New Castle Consistory. He served as a Justice of the Peace and a Judge of Elections in Franklin Township. He also enjoyed farming, growing roses, traveling and the outdoors, but his greatest joy was spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his two sisters, Dorothy Rock and Emma Goas; two brothers, William and Richard H. Gardner; and an infant son, Brian K. Gardner.

GARDNER — Friends of Clair W. Gardner, who passed away Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, will be received at Young Funeral Home, 127 W. Jefferson St., Butler, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.Services will be at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Friday with Pastor Andrew Shaffer of the Camp Run Presbyterian Church and the Rev.
