County pool repairs could cost $1 million plus

BUTLER TWP — Butler County could spend more than $1 million to make repairs and upgrades to Alameda Pool.

The Butler County commissioners are considering what fixes and improvements should be done at the pool in Alameda Park.

According to the draft of a study done by the Harrisburg firm Wade Associates, repairs would amount to $635,650.

Among the more costly fixes are $135,000 for a new deck and deck drain, $115,000 for preparation work and plastering, and $94,000 for new gutter and return perimeter piping.

Wade recommends another $708,000 in upgrades, pushing the total to more than $1.3 million, as a way to increase the pool’s use and revenue.

Gary Pinkerton, director of county park and recreation, said the repairs must be done.

“We have water leaks that need to be addressed,” he said.

All three commissioners agree work needs done at the pool, but differ on what’s necessary.

Commissioner Bill McCarrier, board chairman, said galvanized pipe around the pool’s perimeter needs replaced.

“They’re full of holes,” he said. “That’s why the slabs are moving.”

Although Commissioner Dale Pinkerton agrees with McCarrier, Commissioner Jim Eckstein believes the repairs don’t need to be as extensive.

Eckstein said $100,000 could be saved by only replacing the damaged concrete.

“Some of it looks pristine,” he said.

Eckstein said additional financial pruning, such as lowering the $65,000 contingency line item would further reduce the cost.
