Scoop's on the rebound
There’s a chill in the air these days and it’s not because Mrs. Scoop is disappointed with my picks over the last few weeks.
The frigid nights of fall are here.
This is already the eighth week. It’s been fun, hasn’t it?
This week is all about redemption. Teams who took it on the chin in Week 7 are looking to get back on track Friday.
Include Mr. Scoop among them. I was 7-3 last week — not bad, but not great either. I strive for greatness and a 58-20 overall record is not great.
On to the picks, and hopefully, my own redemption:
Butler 24, Fox Chapel 15 — A win here will guarantee the Golden Tornado a spot in the WPIAL Quad-A playoffs. Let that sink in for a moment ...
A trip to the postseason would mean the world to a Butler program that, well, has struggled mightily lately.
Seneca Valley 31, Bethel Park 26 — It’s a non-section game, but it still has playoff implications. The winner here will likely get a better seed come playoff time.
Plus, it’s a good measuring stick for both clubs.
Knoch 32, Indiana 6 — The Knights have to be feeling pretty good about themselves after shutting down Mars last week.
The Little Indians will help Knoch feel even better this week.
Mars 40, Hollidaysburg 6 — I wouldn’t want to be a Golden Tiger right now.
They will be feeling anything but Gr-r-reat after Mars takes out its frustration on them this week.
Washington 29, Freeport 16 — This is another non-section test for both teams with potential seeding implications later.
The Yellowjackets tend to play well in big games and this is a chance for Freeport to make a pretty big statement.
Slippery Rock 41, Franklin 14 — The Rockets will be another team spitting mad after a bad loss last week.
Even in defeat, Slippery Rock did some good things against Grove City on those rare occasion when its offense was actually on the field.
Karns City 26, Oil City 15 — The Gremlins have been ravaged by injuries, but look up and find a pretty solid 5-2 record. Make that 6-2 after this week.
Union 28, Moniteau 20 — The Golden Knights bounced back nicely from their first loss of the season, including a 46-6 drubbing of Clarion-Limestone last week. By the way, I picked that exact score last week.
Grove City 40, Titusville 6 — The Eagles are mostly healthy again after suffering a rash of injuries.
A mended Grove City team is a dangerous Grove City team.
Grove City beat the Slippery Rock Rockets last week and will do the same against the Titusville Rockets.
Shady Side Academy 27, Summit Academy 16 — It’s the yearly Academy Bowl.
It seems the Knights go as quarterback Chris Harp goes. If he is completing passes, his team usually wins.
Scoop is already looking forward to the high school football playoffs.
