PITTSBURGH — A Pittsburgh police officer was treated and released at a hospital after his bulletproof vest stopped a shot during an incident in which two other people were shot, at least one of them by the officer involved.

Police Chief Nate Harper was at the scene after the shootings about 5:15 a.m. today and was expected to brief the media later.

Investigators said the officer was taken to UPMC Mercy hospital as a precaution, not because he was wounded.

Police said the unidentified man was shot by the officer, and a woman was also shot, though it wasn’t immediately clear by whom.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed it had not been called to the scene because a deputy there said none of those wounded had suffered life-threatening injuries.
