Mother, teenage daughter escape blaze in Clay Township
CLAY TWP — Fire early this morning roused a mother and teenage daughter from their beds and forced them out of their mobile home on Halston Road, authorities said.
No injuries were reported in the accidental blaze shortly before 3:30 a.m. near the Clay Township-West Sunbury line.
Chief Reid Campbell of the West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department blamed a dryer in the middle of the home and pyrolysis — the decomposition of solid material through the application of heat — for the fire.
Over time, he explained, the heat from the dryer degraded the wood floor it was on, causing the chemical decomposition and creating the conditions for fire.
Authorities did not identify the pair because they are living at the so-called “safe house” while under a protection from abuse order that the woman previously obtained against her husband.
The occupants apparently did not have time to get any belongings and immediately fled the 12-by-60-foot trailer.
Damage was estimated at $10,000.
