Lou Horning

Louis J. Horning, 90, of Winfield Township went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday at Good Samaritan Hospice, Jefferson Township.

Mr. Horning was born on Jan. 13, 1922, in the Campton area of Natrona Heights, to the late Louis A. and Estelle Tiso Horning.

He graduated from Har-Brack High School in 1939 and graduated from Notre Dame. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II from 1942 to 1946. He was a flight engineer on a B-24, earning three medals including a Good Conduct Medal and a Victory Medal.

He spent most of his life in the grocery business working as an employee, manager and eventually owner of the Horning Supermarket until its closing in 1975. He also was a substitute teacher at Har-Brack High School before his retirement in 1981.

He was a member of St. Joseph Church, Cabot. He was a member of the Natrona Heights VFW and the Notre Dame Alumni Club. He also enjoyed golf, football, baseball, traveling and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Florence Crestani Horning; his children, Michael (Ellen) Horning of Pembroke Pines, Fla., Mark (Bonnie) Horning of Timonium, Md., and Dr. Margaret (Dr. John Charley) Horning of Pittsburgh; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Ernest (Elizabeth) Horning of Natrona Heights and Joseph (Marlene) Horning of Fawn Township.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ward Stakem officiating. Please meet at the church.
