Chicora man faces more assault charges

He's already jailed for alleged child molestation

CHICORA — A suspected child molester already jailed in one case now faces new charges in an unrelated case.

District Judge Lewis Stoughton on Tuesday arraigned Stephen G. Batchelder, 33, of Butler Township on charges he sexually assaulted an infant girl in 2002 and 2003.

State police filed the latest charges five weeks after Butler Township police arrested Batchelder following his alleged confession that he molested a 5-year-old girl in 2010.

During his Aug. 28 interview with township police, according to court documents, Batchelder admitted to sexually assaulting other children in Butler County.

Troopers later questioned Batchelder, who recounted his sexual assault of a 6-month-old girl in 2002. He said he was babysitting the infant in Center Township.

Police allege he assaulted the infant from later 2002 to early 2003

He told investigators he made his confession because “things have been really bothering him,” a police affidavit said.

Batchelder claimed he has “a sexually addiction,” Trooper Adam Peth said in charging documents, “and needs help.”

Batchelder also admitted molesting the infant to his then-girlfriend, police said. Peth said he spoke to her and the infant’s mother as part of his investigation.

Stoughton arraigned Batchelder on charges of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, aggravated indecent assault, corruption of minors, indecent assault and child endangerment

He set bail in the case at $50,000.

Batchelder has been in Butler County Prison since Aug. 29, on the Butler Township charges.

Batchelder in that case contacted police and told them that he “wanted to talk and get some things off of his chest,” Detective Sgt. Nathan Teslik said in court papers.

The defendant claimed he was having “recurring nightmares” stemming in part from having allegedly molested a 5-year-old girl in July 2010 at his home.

Teslik said he corroborated what he could of the account.

“Batchelder asked for help and wanted to know if we could recommend some type of rehab for his behavior,” the detective said.

Teslik charged Batchelder with aggravated indecent assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, indecent assault and child endangerment.
