SLIPPERY ROCK — Defending NCAA Division II champion West Chester will take on ninth-ranked Slippery Rock in collegiate field hockey action at 3 p.m. Friday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
SRU is 6-3 and riding a three-game winning streak. Top-ranked West Chester is 7-1 and has outscored its opponents 29-7.
SRU and West Chester have met only once previously in field hockey, the Golden Rams taking a 3-0 win in 1976, The Rock's first season in the sport.
SLIPPERY ROCK — Butler graduate and Mercyhurst University senior Becky Smith will be at Morrow Field House Friday night to face Slippery Rock in women's volleyball play.Smith has 108 kills for the visiting Lakers (13-4), who recently had a 12-match winning streak snapped. SRU is 10-5 overall, 3-1 in PSAC West play. The Rock had a seven-match win streak snapped by a 3-0 loss to Clarion Tuesday.Game time is 7 p.m.
SLIPPERY ROCK — The 29th class of the Slippery rock University Athletic Hall of Fame will be inducted on Saturday.The induction of the Class of 2012 will increase to 189 the number of former Rock student-athletes, coaches and contributors.This year's class members are Anthony Calderaio (Class of 1983, wrestling), Gene Collodi (1963, football), Ken Denne (1959, basketball), Ron Hunt (1973, football-track), Sonya Maher (1999, women's soccer), Todd Olsen (Class of 1985, soccer), Jim Ward (1994, football) and the 1989-90 men's basketball team.
NEW YORK — The NFL fined Patriots coach Bill Belichick $50,000 and Redskins assistant Kyle Shanahan $25,000 for their conduct toward replacement officials.Belichick grabbed an official's arm at the end of Sunday night's game after the Ravens kicked a winning field goal. Shanahan was cited by the league for “abuse of officials” during a game against the Bengals.

As athletic director, he pulled the football program he built out of a nosedive and repaired a fractured department where morale had bottomed out.And now, he's almost done.The 75-year-old announced that he will retire Jan. 1 after five years on the job. He'll become athletic director emeritus and stay involved in department operations until July 30.Osborne's first acts were to fire football coach Bill Callahan and hire Bo Pelini.
