County sheriff gets new K-9 dog

The Butler County Sheriff’s K-9 program is reloaded with a new Bullet, a drug-sniffing dog.

Bullet, a German short-haired pointer, began work Monday.

“We are in service,” said Sheriff Mike Slupe.

The dog replaces another pointer, which also was named Bullet.

“The new dog is more suited to the goals that we have set forth,” Slupe said.

Bullet is paired with Sgt. Harry Callithen.

“These two have matched up well,” Slupe said.

Callithen, 42, of Center Township said he wanted to be a K-9 officer because of the opportunity.

“It’s a unique duty a law enforcement officer doesn’t always get,” he said.

Bullet is trained to detect cocaine, heroin, marijuana, methamphetamines and their derivatives.

The K-9 unit will assist the Butler County Drug Task Force.

Along with a $10,000 grant from the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation, another $4,790 in donations paid to buy and train a dog.
