CHANDLER, Ariz. — The Slippery Rock University field hockey team jumped into the national rankings at No. 10 on Tuesday.

It’s the first time the team has been nationally ranked since 1987, when the squad played at the Division III level and it matches the highest ranking in the program’s history.

The Rock (3-3, 0-1) earned the recognition after tightly contested games against No. 1 Shippensburg, No. 3 Bloomsburg and No. 6 Millersville. Slippery Rock is one of eight PSAC teams in the top 10.

Freeport grad nabs D-III national honorGREENVILLE — Freeport graduate and Thiel College sophomore Cody McClelland made the D3football.com Play of the Week on Saturday.The kicker’s potential game-wining 22-yard field-goal attempt went awry on a bad snap, but McClelland scooped up the ball and tossed a 5-yard touchdown to Berend Grube to beat Geneva College in overtime.The victory snapped a 24-game losing streak for the Tomcats (1-2). McClelland alsocontributed three extra points and recorded a sack on defense during the win.

SRU men’s soccer ranked No. 22SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock University men’s soccer team is ranked No. 22 in this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association rankings.SRU (3-0-3) defeated Pitt-Johnstown 3-0 on the road and tied Urbana, 2-2, last week. The Rock begins PSAC play Thursday, hosting Mercyhurst at 4 p.m. at Egli Field.

Escobar banned 3 games for slur NEW YORK — Yunel Escobar was suspended for three games Tuesday by the Toronto Blue Jays for wearing eye-black displaying a homophobic slur written in Spanish during last Saturday’s game against the Boston Red Sox.Pictures posted online showed the Blue Jays shortstop with the message written in his eye-black, a sticker players wear under their eyes to reduce glare from the sun. The slur did not appear to be directed at any person in particular.

Falcons’ Turner arrested for DUI ATLANTA — Atlanta Falcons running back Michael Turner has been arrested for drunken driving and speeding in metro Atlanta just hours after he scored a touchdown in the team’s win over the Denver Broncos.Gwinnett County jail records show 30-year-old Turner was booked just after 5 a.m. Tuesday. He was released two hours later on $2,179 bond.The traffic citation given to Turner shows he was pulled over for driving 97 mph in a 65 mph speed zone.
