Valencia man accused of hit-and-run accident

PITTSBURGH — A Butler County man was arraigned this morning on a charge of causing an accident involving injury, a third-degree felony, stemming from a hit-and-run accident that seriously injured a bicyclist in the city’s Highland Park neighborhood.

Pittsburgh police arrested Mark D. McCloskey, 26, of Valencia on Tuesday night after his car drove onto a sidewalk at North Euclid Avenue and Bunker Hill Street.

McCloskey’s Dodge Stratus hit the bicyclist, David C. Wood, 76, of Pittsburgh, who was on the sidewalk. Wood was knocked to the pavement and apparently hit his head.

An ambulance took him to UPMC Presbyterian with head, neck and other injuries. He was in fair condition today.

Witnesses told officers that they saw McCloskey’s car drive away after the 6:17 p.m. crash, according to a police report.

He was found about 7:25 p.m. just several miles away after his car crashed a second time on Butler Street in Lawrenceville, police said.

A police drug evaluation later determined he was not under the influence.

He was arraigned this morning on a charge of causing an accident involving injury, a third-degree felony. He also is charged with hit-and-run, a misdemeanor, and reckless driving, a traffic violation.

He was in the Allegheny County Jail on $25,000 bail, following arraignment.
