KANSAS CITY — The Slippery Rock University women’s soccer team moved up four places to No. 10 in the latest NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II national rankings released Tuesday by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
The Rock, which was ranked No. 14 in the preseason rankings, opened their season last week with a 1-0 win on the road at Wheeling Jesuit. Slippery Rock was dominant in that match, allowing just one shot on goal and posting a 9-0 edge in corner kicks.
SRU is ranked No. 2 in the first Atlantic Region rankings, which were also released Tuesday by the NSCAA. California (Pa.) was ranked atop the Atlantic Region and ranked No. 4 nationally.
Butler VB part of cancer benefitVANDERGRIFT — The Butler girls volleyball team will face host Kiski Area in a volleyball doubleheader today to benefit cancer research.The game will be followed by Point Park University against Seton Hill University.The money raised will benefit a fund in memory of former Kiski player Jamie Moran, a former player at Kiski under Meghan Lucas, now the Butler coach.Moran, who had defeated leukemia three times, succumbed to the illness early last month at the age of 28.
Clark launches sickle cell campaign PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark is teaming up with a Pittsburgh hospital to help raise awareness for those who suffer from sickle cell blood disorder.Clark and UPMC launched the “Cure League” on Tuesday, hoping to bring more attention to sickle cell disease. Clark is one an estimated 2 million Americans who suffer from the disorder. He had to have his spleen removed after the disease was aggravated playing at high elevation in Denver in 2007.
