Truck with butane overturns, forces town evacuation
KANE, Pa. — A tanker truck carrying the highly flammable liquid butane overturned in the middle of this small northwestern Pennsylvania community early today, forcing the evacuation of about 1,000 residents and closing school for the day.
Emergency officials cleared about 250 households as a precaution after the truck overturned about 4:30 a.m. in Kane , a town on the edge of the Allegheny National Forest northeast of Butler.
No injuries were reported and the tanker did not leak any butane, which is commonly used as lighter fuel.
Kane volunteer firefighter said that the evacuation affected about a quarter of the town’s population.
Residents were evacuated to the town’s high school. The Kane School District canceled classes for the day. Wile said another trucking company was sending a truck to pump the butane out and haul it away.
A PennDOT spokesman said the road where the crash happened, U.S. Route 6, would be closed in town until at least late morning.
