PITTSBURGH — Two men were acquitted of charges they shot and paralyzed a Pittsburgh-area police officer during a home invasion last year, though one of the men was convicted of related counts.

The case against 27-year-old Emilio Rivera of McKees Rocks and 19-year-old Marcus Andrejco of Rankin was unusual in that both men were charged only after two other men were charged and then freed.

The jury acquitted Andrejco of all charges. Rivera was convicted of burglary, robbery and other charges related to the home invasion — but not with shooting Kuzak, who declined comment.

PHILADELPHIA — One of the lead plaintiffs in a lawsuit to block Pennsylvania's new Voter ID law has been granted the identification necessary to cast her ballot despite lacking the documentation required to get the card.Viviette Applewhite, 93, received her temporary identification card on Thursday, the same day her attorneys appealed a judge's ruling upholding the law Applewhite sued over.Applewhite of Philadelphia testified in July that she was unable to get the necessary documents for an identification card because she was adopted early in life.State officials say PennDOT is committed to working with applicants on a case-by-case basis.

SCRANTON — The sentencing hearing in former state Sen. Robert Mellow's corruption case is now scheduled for October.A federal judge has granted probation officials more time to finish their presentence report on Mellow, who pleaded guilty to a federal conspiracy charge stemming from misuse of his taxpayer-funded staff.A newspaper reports U.S. District Judge Joel Slomsky on Tuesday pushed Mellow's sentencing date back to Oct. 8. Mellow could get up to five years in prison.Prosecutors said Mellow exhibited “willful blindness” while staffers used work hours to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Friends of Bob Mellow campaign committee and the Democratic State Senate Campaign Committee.Mellow served four decades in the Senate before deciding not to seek re-election.
