PITTSBURGH — A judge in Pittsburgh has been asked to decide whether suspended Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Joan Orie Melvin should be tried alongside her sister and former aide, Janine Orie, on campaign corruption charges.

Attorneys for the sisters on Tuesday asked Allegheny County Judge Jeffrey Manning to try the women separately, arguing some of the criminal allegations against each are unrelated and — if heard together — could prejudice the jury against one or both sisters.

Additionally, Janine Orie’s attorney says she’s waited long enough for her trial since some of the charges were filed against her in 2010 and others in December — while Melvin was charged only in May.

Prosecutors want the women tried together arguing that the women are charged as part of one combined course of conduct.

Manning promised a ruling soon.
