BECKLEY, W.Va. — The Prospect League will begin its best-of-three championship series tonight as the West Virginia Miners host Dubois County at 7:05 p.m.
West Virginia defeated Chillicothe 6-2 on Tuesday for the East Division championship, while Dubois County edged Terre Haute 3-2 to win the West title.
SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team enters the 2012 season ranked No. 14 by the National Soccer Coaches of America.SRU was 16-5-2 last season, reaching the NCAA Round of 16 and posting 11 consecutive shutouts. All-PSAC selections Emer Flatley, Shelby Ward, Izabel Scott and Lucy Hannon return this season.The Rock begins the campaign Aug. 30 at Wheeling Jesuit.
PITTSBURGH — Jason Li of Cranberry Township carded a 77 to win the boys 13-14 age division of the US Kids Golf Tour event Tuesday at Shannopin Country Club.Four other area golfers finished second in their respective age groups: Natalie Welsh of Valencia with an 89 (girls 12-14), James Ellis of Butler with a 91 (boys 12), Henry Bartony III of Butler with an 80 (boys 11) and Paige Scott of Butler with a 50 (girls 8-9).Kennedy Johnston of Cranberry Township carded a 95 to take third in girls 12-14, Zach Gehm of Harmony a 98 to tie for third in boys 12.The US Kids Golf Tour Championship takes place at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lake Arthur Country Club. Spectators are welcome.
FARMINGTON — Butler's Anthony Smaldino finished in a three-way tie for first place in the Kings Restaurant Junior Golf Player of the Year Championship Wednesday at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort's Mystic Rock Course, but came up short on the second playoff hole to Javon Trout of Greensburg.Trout, Smaldino and Zack Taylor of Pittsburgh each carded a 76 in the boys 15-16 division, but Trout was able to pull out the title.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia football coach Dana Holgorsen will earn $2.3 million this season under a new six-year contract, athletic director Oliver Luck said.
