USO dance on Friday

Iron your military uniform or dust off your zoot suit and get into the swing from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday at the Associated Artists of Butler County Arts Center, 344 S. Main St.

The Art Center is hosting a certified United Service Organiations (USO) dance as part of the Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival this weekend.

The center’s Terry Hagen said he thought the USO dance would be a unique event for the festival and it was approved by the association’s board of directors.

It will feature dancing and music from the 1930s and 1940s, and Hagen hopes people will come dressed in period outfits.

Teachers and students from the Euphoric Ballroom in Butler will attend the dance to give demonstrations of swing, jitter bug and other period dances.

There will be a dance contest and a $1 a dance segment, in which the public will be able to dance with Euphoric Ballroom dancers for a donation that will be split between the art center and the USO.

Big band music will be presented by DJ Todd Fair and the event emceed by Jerry Johnston.

“I think this is going to be a really good event for the Jeep festival, and if it goes really well, we might do it every year,” Hagen said.

The festival begins Friday night with 1,000 Jeeps lining Main Street. On Saturday and Sunday, it will be at the Big Butler Fairgrounds.
