Police: Man shoots himself, crashes vehicle into store in Cranberry Twp.

CRANBERRY TWP — An unidentified man is dead after he allegedly shot himself while his vehicle was being pursued by police, causing it to crash into the Lane Bryant clothing store in Cranberry Commons early Saturday.

According to a statement released by Cranberry Township police, a vehicle was seen speeding along Route 228 near Mars High School at about 3:15 a.m. Saturday and officers from Adams Township police attempted to pull over the driver.

The driver refused to stop and was chased into Cranberry Township. As Cranberry Township officers raced to intercept the vehicle on Route 228, it turned into Cranberry Commons.

In that parking lot, according to police, the vehicle’s driver fatally wounded himself with a single gunshot while the car still was moving. The car crashed into the front of the Lane Bryant clothing store, causing extensive damage.

A small fire, which started underneath the vehicle after the crash, was extinguished by officers on the scene.

As of Saturday morning, police had not identified the driver or determined why he had been fleeing from police.
