James E. Young Sr.

James Young

James E. Young Sr., 89, of Butler went to be with the Lord at 11:08 a.m. Tuesday at his home.

Jim proudly served our country during World War II in the U.S. Army with the 120th Infantry Regiment from March 1943 until October 1945, achieving the rank of Pfc. He landed at Omaha Beach in Normandy, Rhineland and Ardennes in Central Europe. He was wounded on the outskirts of St. Lo in the Battle of the Hedgerows on July 17, 1943. He received a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, a European Africa Middle East Service medal with four bronze stars, the Good Conduct Medal and the Embassy of France Thank You America Certificate. He was a member of the Butler American Legion.

He moved from Meadville Street, Pittsburgh, after buying a farm in the Carbon Center, Butler area, in 1959. He enjoyed farming with his sons, grandsons and great-grandchildren. He especially liked spoiling his great-grandchildren.

He owned and operated his own plastering business from 1946 until he gave it up in 1989 due to ill health.

Born March 23, 1923, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late George Albert Young Sr. and Eleanora Pauline Wagenlender Young.

He was the husband of the late Norma Jean Reid Young, who he married Sept. 27, 1946, and who died June 6, 1996.

He is survived by his son, James E. Young Jr. and his wife, Linda S. Rodgers Young, of Butler; grandsons, James G. Young, David “Packy” R. Young and his wife, Heidi L. Mortimer Young, and twins, John P. Young and his wife, Amy S. Riding Young, and Charles P. Young; great-grandchildren, Tyler J. Young, Robbie J. Young, Destiny Moniot and Angela Mortimer; sister, Violet Bishoff and her husband, Robert, of South Carolina; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma; a son, Robert J. Young, who died in 1972; and his siblings, George, Merril, Harry and Bob Young, Eleanora Vidt and Betty Graham.

YOUNG — Friends of James E. Young Sr., who died Tuesday, June 26, 2012, will be received at the STEIGHNER FUNERAL HOME, 111 East Slippery Rock and Main streets, Chicora, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home and officiated by the Rev. James Lynn, pastor of the Wesleyan Methodist Church, Mitchell Hill Road, Butler.
