Youth softball teams fare wellNATRONA HEIGHTS — The Karns City 15U fastpitch team, sponsored by Parker’s Appliances, went undefeated to capture the Natrona Heights Tournament last weekend.Karns City defeated Hampton 14-4 in the championship game.Team members are Taylor Downs, Jordan Downs, Alyssa Gibson, Leeann Gibson, Morgan Deal, Jensen Bachman, Ashley Coon, Brittany Coyle, Katelyn Bronder, Sydney Mershimer and Clara Stoughton.• The Saxonburg 12U slow-pitch softball team went 3-1 in the Saxonburg Tournament, falling to Mt. Pleasant 14-0 in the finals last weekend.Saxonburg had defeated Aspinwall 12-0 and Mercer 10-2 on Saturday and again beat Mercer 10-5 on Sunday before the championship final.
Boros tied for 5th at golf eventCORAOPOLIS — Joe Boros of Treesdale Golf and Country Club fired a first-day round of 71 to place him in a fifth-place tie with three others at the Tri-State PGA Professional Championship Monday at Montour Heights Country Club.Tony Traci of Allegheny Country Club leads the two-day event with a 69.John Aubrey of Aubrey’s Dubbs Dred and Denny Dolci of St. Jude Golf Club are tied for 22nd place (74), Jody Barrett of Cranberry Highlands Golf Course is tied in 42nd place (78), Jimmy Brahm of Butler Country Club is tied for 46th (79) and Rob McClellan of Butler Country Club is tied for 59th (81).
Reports: Steelers, sign DeCastro PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh media outlets reported Monday that the Steelers have signed top draft pick David DeCastro to a four-year contract with the option for a fifth year.Terms were not disclosed.The former Stanford University guard is expected to become the second rookie in three years to start on the Steelers’ offensive line, joining center Maurkice Pouncey (2010).
