The Eagle County League baseball playoff pairings are set.
Mars (27-5) and Saxonburg (24-8) were the top-two teams in the standings and will receive a first-round bye.
In the best-of-three first round, which begins at 6 p.m. today, No. 3 seed Mars II (19-13) will play No. 6 seed Freeport (13-14) at Callery, while No. 4 seed Cranberry (15-14) will host No. 5 seed Zelienople (13-18) at North Boundary Park.
Game 2 will be Tuesday and Game 3, if necessary, will be played Wednesday. The semifinal round is scheduled to begin Friday, weather permitting.
The lowest surviving seed from the first round will play Mars with Saxonburg squaring off against the highest surviving seed.
Several local youth golfers fared well at the sixth event on the U.S. Kids Golf Pittsburgh Tour at Hillcrest Country Club in Lower Burrell over the weekend:• Henry Bartony III of Butler shot an 80 to snag first place in the Boys 11 division.• James Ellis of Butler fired and 88 to claim the top spot in the Boys 12 division.• Jason Li of Cranberry Township shot a 78 to win the Boys 13-14 division.• Paige Scott of Butler shot a 49 to place second in the Girls 8-9 division.• Kennedy Johnston of Cranberry Township carded a 45 to finish second in the Girls 12-14 division.• Adam Bushee of Cranberry Township finished with an 82 to place second in the Boys 13-14 division.
Both the Cranberry Township and Lyndora Palomino baseball teams were eliminated from the 2012 Palomino Super Region Tournament at Highfield Park over the weekend.After losing Friday, Cranberry staved off elimination early Saturday morning with a win over the Cleveland Stars.However, Cranberry fell in the next game to North Hills to exit the tournament.No other information was available.Lyndora suffered the same fate. The team won its Saturday morning game over Youngstown Livi Steel 8-5, but fell to Washington 11-3 Saturday night.
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled right-handed reliever Evan Meek from Triple-A, placing reliever Juan Cruz on the disabled list with right shoulder inflammation.The 29-year-old Meek went 3-2 with one save, a 2.27 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 27 appearances over two stints with Indianapolis.
LYTHAM ST. ANNES, England — Golf officials are discussing whether they should ban long putters.Ernie Els became the third champion in the last four majors to use a belly putter. He won the British Open after Adam Scott — who uses a long putter — bogeyed his last four holes. Webb Simpson won the U.S. Open and Keegan Bradley won the PGA Championship using belly putters.
