PITTSBURGH — The University of Pittsburgh board of trustees has approved raising tuition for students at its main and branch campuses.

The tuition for in-state and out-of-state students at the main campus will rise 3 percent this year. That means tuition for an in-state undergraduate at the university's school of arts and sciences, for example, will pay $15,730 this year, compared to $15,272 last year.

Branch campus students will see tuition rise 2 percent. A full-time, in-state undergrad, for example, will pay $11,970, up from $11,736.

DUNMORE — Students at Penn State University will be reaching just a little deeper into their pockets to pay for school.The Penn State Board of Trustees has voted to hike in-state tuition by 2.9 percent at the main campus in State College and 1.9 percent at its branch campuses. That's the lowest tuition increase in 45 years.The tuition increase is not related to the cost of the Jerry Sandusky scandal. The school has said those costs are being covered by its insurer. In-state freshman and sophomores attending the main campus will pay about $15,560 next year. That's $440 more than last year.

PITTSBURGH — Five of six light-rail stops in downtown Pittsburgh and the city's North Shore were closed, snarling the transit service, because of a problem that shut down the ventilation in tunnels between the stops.The Port Authority of Allegheny County system was able to run normally through Pittsburgh's South Hills suburbs because the trains run above ground in that area. But the outages that began Friday about 9:30 a.m. weren't cured until nearly noon. A transit spokesman said the cause of the problem was still being investigated.

CHARLEROI — A teacher has been ordered to stand trial on charges he had sex with a 15-year-old girl he met after he was hired to direct a high school musical in a nearby district.Jeffrey Hahn, 23, of Belle Vernon, has pleaded not guilty to involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and other charges to which he waived his right to a preliminary hearing Thursday.Hahn was a seventh grade teacher at the Bethlehem-Center School District but allegedly committed the crimes in May at the Charleroi Area Junior-Senior High School.
