FREEPORT — Numerous local golfers fared well at the US Kids Golf Pittsburgh Tour event held Tuesday at Birdsfoot Golf Club.
Kennedy Johnston of Cranberry Township shot a 90 to win the girls age 12-14 age bracket. Henry Bartony III of Butler shot an 80 to win the boys 11 age bracket.
James Ellis of Butler carded a 91, Zach Gehm of Harmony a 98 to finish second and third, respectively, in the boys 12 age bracket. Paige Scott of Butler shot a 5-0 to finish second in the girls 8-9 bracket.
Clippers' Griffin to miss OlympicsLAS VEGAS — The Los Angeles Clippers say Blake Griffin has torn cartilage in his left knee and will miss the Olympics.Griffin returned to Los Angeles on Thursday for further evaluation after reporting discomfort in the same knee that bothered him in the playoffs following Wednesday's practice. The Clippers said he will require arthroscopic surgery and should be ready for training camp.USA Basketball officials said they hadn't been told Griffin would be forced to pull out. Once he does, the Americans will be able to replace him on their 12-man roster, likely with Anthony Davis.
Matteson's 10 birdies produce PGA leadSILVIS, Ill. — Troy Matteson scored 10 birdies Thursday en route to a bogey-free round of 10-under 61 for a three-stroke stroke lead after one round of the John Deere Classic.Matteson, a two-time winner on the PGA Tour, birdied five holes on each nine of the TPC Deere Run to surpass the 7-under 64 of second place Ricky Barnes. Matteson started by making birdies on three of his first four holes and finished with birdies on four of his first five.
NFL files grievance over Vilma lawsuitNEW YORK — The NFL has filed a grievance with the players' union asking New Orleans Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma to drop his defamation lawsuit against Commissioner Roger Goodell.The league claims Vilma's suit violates the collective bargaining agreement reached last August to end the lockout. A clause in the CBA, which the NFL says the union agreed to, bars NFL Players Association members from suing the league or any clubs.Vilma tweeted in response to the NFL's grievance: “The nfl sent me a letter “demanding” I drop my defamation suit or else...lol or else wat?!?? They no likey me lawsuitey.”The New Orleans Times-Picayune first reported the NFL's grievance filing.Vilma has been suspended for the 2012 season by Goodell for his role in the Saints' bounties program that the NFL says was conducted for three years.
