PLUM — Karns City's 15-under fastpitch softball team, sponsored by Parker's Appliances, won the nine-team Plum Tournament last weekend.

The squad defeated teams from Ingomar, Franklin Regional, White Oak, Greensburg, Plum and Harrison City to take first-place honors.

Players included Sydney Mershimer, Jordan Downs, Clara Stoughton, Jensen Bachman, Morgan Deal, Brittany Coyle, Ashley Coon, Taylor Downs, Leeann Gibson, Saydie Moore and Alyssa Gibson.

Coaches were James “Buddy” Gibson and Stacy Stoughton.

BUTLER TWP — Two 2012 Butler High School athletes — Nate Snodgrass in boys basketball and Marissa DeCola in girls golf — have received WPIAL Scholar Athlete awards this year.Both are receiving $500 scholarships from the WPIAL.

GROVE CITY — Grove City College graduate Chelsea Johnson has been named Division III Co-Player of the Year by The Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches.Johnson led Grove City with 82 goals this season and graduates as the Wolverines' all-time leading scorer with 293 goals.

McMURRAY — Ryan Sikora of the Pittsburgh Field Club and Wexford's Rick Stimmel carded a 93 to win the 27-hole Pro-Scratch Amateur Monday at Valley Brook Country Club.St. Jude Golf Club pro Dennis Dolci and Sean Knapp tied for second with 99, six strokes back. Sikora was low pro for the event with a 102 while Nathan Smith was low amateur with a 105.

Andy Hilliard Recognition Night will take place during the Butler BlueSox-Chillicothe game July 17 at Pullman Park.Hilliard dedicated his adult life to sports and the youth of Butler. From 1970 through the early 1990’s, he coached Pony and Prep league baseball teams at Pullman Park and Father Marinaro Park and served as commissioner of Pony League Baseball for years.He was also a commissioner of Butler County American Legion baseball and an assistant coach at East Butler.Organizers are trying to gather Hilliard’s former players and peers together for a reunion and to recognize his efforts.
