Judge: Ex-Sen. Orie owes $180,000 in corruption case
PITTSBURGH — A judge ruled today that former state Sen. Jane Orie, R-40th, must pay roughly $180,000 to cover restitution and state Senate legal bills stemming from her corruption conviction — and a yet-to-be determined amount to cover Allegheny County’s cost of prosecuting her.
Common Pleas Judge Jeffrey Manning rejected prosecution arguments that Orie should pay as much as $2 million, though he agreed with prosecutors that she should forfeit about $89,000 in pension contributions to cover the restitution he ordered Tuesday.
The judge said Orie must pay the remaining debt at a rate of $500 per month once she finishes her 2½- to 10-year sentence for using her state-paid staff to do political work on her behalf.
Prosecutors and Orie’s attorney have not immediately returned calls for comment on the restitution ruling.
