PHILADELPHIA — Ryan Howard will begin a rehab stint Thursday night, a day after Chase Utley returned to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Howard, the 2006 NL MVP, hasn't played since tearing his left Achilles' tendon on the final swing of the 2011 season in Game 5 of the NL division series against St. Louis.

MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Bucks have acquired veteran center Samuel Dalembert from the Houston Rockets in a trade the day before the NBA draft.The Bucks said Wednesday they got Dalembert, the 14th overall pick in Thursday's draft, a future second round pick and cash considerations from Houston in exchange for forwards Jon Brockman and Jon Leuer, guard Shaun Livingston and the 12th pick.

FARMINGTON — Anthony Smaldino of Butler carded a 72 to capture the boys 15-16 division at the Kings Restaurants Junior Golf Tournament Wednesday at Nemacolin Woodlands Resorts.Smaldino won by one stroke over Javon Trout and two over Josh Huhn and R.J. Bartolomucci.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Melanie Prelec, a member of the Youngstown State University women's track and field team, was one of 16 Penguin athletes to be named to the Horizon League All-Academic teams.To be eligible, student-athletes must have a 3.2 GPA or higher, completed one year at the school with 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits and were voted on by the league's faculty athletics representatives and sports information directors.The 16 members led all conference squads.

LOCK HAVEN — Five Slippery Rock University sports teams earned PSAC Team GPA Awards Wednesday for posting the highest collective grade point averages for all conference teams.The Rock's field hockey (3.529, also ranked No. 1 in Division II), football (2.853), women's lacrosse (3.263), men's track and field (3.174) and women's track and field (3.346) were tops in the conference while 13 of the 15 programs were in the top six overall.

PITTSBURGH — Wexford native and Pine-Richland graduate Mike Van Sickle fired a four-round total of 283 to finish in second place at the Frank B. Fuhrer Invitational Wednesday at the Pittsburgh Field Club.Van Sickle used a 69 in the final round, but winner David Bradshaw added a 68 to win by three strokes with a 280.Amateur and St. Jude member Nathan Smith finished in ninth place with a score of 293, while Joe Boros of Treesdale Golf & Country Club and amateur Sean Knapp were tied for 17th (303); John Aubrey of Aubrey’s Dubbs Dred was 29th (311); Dennis Munko of Birdsfoot Golf Club tied for 32nd (315) and Denny Dolci of St. Jude Golf Club was 38th (320).
