LOCK HAVEN — Slippery Rock University pole vaulter Cameron Daugherty was named to the PSAC Spring Top 10 honors.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must maintain above a 3.5 GPA, be at least a sophomore in academic standing and have significant athletic credentials.
Daugherty won the Division II national championship in the pole vault, the second pole vaulter in school history to win a national title and the first since 1997.
Daugherty graduated in May with a degree in criminology, but will return to SRU for a final season of eligibility next year, where he will pursue a master’s degree in parks and resource management.
Butler Sting grab 2 of 5 games LIBERTY, Ohio — The Butler Sting 16-and-under traveling softball team won two of three games in pool play Saturday at the USSSA qualifying tournament before dropping two games Sunday.Butler opened with a 2-0 loss to the Lady Irish of Ohio before rebounding with a 3-2 win over the Ohio Reign and a 4-3 victory over Thunder Elite of Youngstown.On Sunday, in double-elimination action, the Sting fell 3-2 to the Thunder Elite, then lost to another Thunder Elite squad, 3-1.Noel Pfabe and Beyonna Eckstine led the way offensively for Butler as they batted .438 and .415, respectively, for the weekend,The Sting will return to tournament play this weekend in Meadville.
Steelers release Heisman winnerPITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers have released veteran quarterback Troy Smith, a former Ohio State star who won the 2006 Heisman Trophy.Smith signed with the Steelers earlier this year. He has also spent time with the Omaha Nighthawks (2011) of the United Football League, the San Francisco 49ers (2010) and the Baltimore Ravens (2007-2009). The Ravens drafted him in the fifth round (174th overall) of the 2007 draft.Smith played in 20 NFL games with eight career starts.He led Ohio State to a 12-0 record and the No. 1 ranking in 2006 before the Buckeyes were beaten 41-14 by Florida in the Bowl Championship Series title game.
