SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University track and field standouts Cameron Daugherty and Kara Styles have been named Capital One Academic All-America this year.
Daugherty, a PSAC and national champion pole vaulter as a senior, was named to the first team. He graduated in May with a degree in criminology and will begin work in the parks and resource management master's program at SRU in the fall.
Styles was named PSAC Champion Scholar this year before an injury suffered just before the PSAC Championships cut her season short. She led SRU's distance medley relay to a second-place finish at the PSAC Indoor Championships.
Styles had a 4.0 grade point average while graduating with a degree in exercise science. She will return to SRU this fall to work in the doctor of physical therapy program.
PENN TWP — The 25th annual “Chip-In” for Lifesteps Golf Classic, held June 11 at Butler Country Club, netted $40,000 to benefit the Lifesteps' Family Caring Fund.The event supports programs and services such as Early Education for children of all abilities, and free developmental and autism screenings for children from birth to age 5.
PITTSBURGH — The 2012 Point Park University baseball team, coming off a 53-11 season and fifth-place finish in the NAIA World Series, will be honored on the field prior to Sunday's Detroit Tiger-Pittsburgh Pirate game at PNC Park.Seneca Valley graduate Derek Peluso will be among the Pioneer players recognized on the field between 12:15 and 12:30 p.m.Don Kelly, a Butler native, Tigers utility player and Point Park graduate, will take part in the on-field recognition. Kelly holds the Point Park record for career batting average at .413 and was inducted into the Pioneer Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010.
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — Percy Harvin was nowhere to be found at the Minnesota Vikings' mandatory minicamp practice after reportedly requesting a trade from the team that drafted him in the first round in 2009.Harvin is unhappy with several issues, according to a person with knowledge of the situation who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.
PHILADELPHIA — Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki will have surgery on his left groin area on Thursday.Rockies manager Jim Tracy says a timetable for Tulowitzki’s return won’t be known until he has the surgery. The operation will be performed by Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia.
