Franklyn 'Sid' Humes Heyl
Franklyn “Sid” Humes Heyl, 90, of Slippery Rock passed away Saturday at Good Samaritan Home, Cabot.
He was born in Slippery Rock on Sept. 26, 1921, and was the son of Frank Martin Heyl and Mildred Ann Humes Heyl.
He married Dorothy Marie Hesselgesser on June 10, 1966; she preceded him in death on Sept. 6, 2008.
He was a World War II U.S. Army Air Corps veteran having served two years in the South Pacific. Nine months of the two years was on Iwo Jima where he was awarded the Bronze Star.
He lived his whole life in Slippery Rock. He worked for 38 years for the U.S. Postal Service and retired in 1986 from the Slippery Rock University mail room.
He was a member of the Center Presbyterian Church, Slippery Rock. He belonged to the Grove City VFW 519, the Butler Elks 170, the Slippery Rock American Legion 393 and the National Chapter of Disabled American Veterans. He was an avid Slippery Rock University sports fan. He and his wife, Dorothy, loved dancing to the sound of the big bands.
His survivors include two daughters, June and her husband, Col. James O., Haney of Lakeland, Fla., and Joyce and her husband, Dan, Linehan of Haverhill, Mass.; two stepsons, Gary C. and his wife, Connie, Hesselgesser of New Castle and Dennis J. and his wife, Paula, Hesselgesser, of Newark, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
<B>HEYL</B> — Funeral services for Franklyn “Sid” Humes Heyl, who died Saturday, May 5, 2012, will be at the <B>Smith Funeral Home</B>, 421 New Castle St. Slippery Rock, at 11 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. William Mumaw II, pastor of the Center Presbyterian Church, presiding. Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. today. Interment will be in Slippery Rock Cemetery.Memorial contributions may be given to the Center Presbyterian Church, 211 S. Center St., Slippery Rock, PA 16057.
