PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates have called up infielder Jordy Mercer from Triple-A Indianapolis while demoting 3B Yamaico Navarro.

Mercer, taken by the Pirates with their third pick in the 2008 Draft, was hitting .303 at Indianapolis with 11 doubles, three homers and 22 RBIs. The 25-year-old split time between second base, shortstop and third base but is expected to play shortstop with the Pirates. Mercer hit safely in each of his last eight games with Indianapolis and ranked eighth in the International League in hitting at the time of his call-up.

Navarro hit .178 with one homer and four RBIs in 25 games with the Pirates.

The Western Pennsylvania Football Coaches Association and the newly formed Northwestern Pennsylvania Football Coaches Association will hold the 22nd annual North-South All-Star Football Game June 16.The game will be played at 7 p.m. at Hickory High School.Karns City and Moniteau will have players on the South team. Moniteau head coach Jeff Campbell will coach offense for the South.

ERIE — Seneca Valley graduate and Seven Fields resident Dylan Bilka, a freshman at Penn State Behrend, won the pole vault at the recent Mason-Dixon Conference meet.Bilka was one of three PSU-Behrend athletes — John Cerminara in the discus, Denis Lydon in the 10,000 meters — to win conference titles.

SEWICKLEY — Butler Country Club's Rob McClellan and David Yokitis fired a 64 to capture the Club Car Head Pro-Assisant pro Championship Tuesday at the Allegheny Country Club.McClellan also finished in a ninth place tie along with BCC assistant pro Jimmy Brahm with a total of 68.

Seneca Valley High School product Ryan Mayeda is a member of the Dowling College men's lacrosse team, which won the NCAA Division II national title Saturday with an 11-10 win over Limestone College.Mayeda served as the team's backup goalie.
