Thomas 'Tom' Peters
Thomas “Tom” Peters, 67, of Butler passed away Tuesday at the Good Samaritan Hospice, Cabot, with his family by his side after a long battle with cancer.
Tom was born on July 29, 1944. He grew up in Slate Lick with his parents, Pete and Peg (Helm); his brother, Larry; and his sister, Sonie. Tom was the middle of the three. His childhood, like the rest of his life, was filled with the outdoors, big smiles and lots of laughter.
Tom was a U.S. Navy veteran, and he served in Vietnam. Upon returning home, he went to work for Allegheny Ludlum in Brackenridge. He retired in 2010 after 35 years as a maintenance supervisor. He demonstrated a very strong work ethic and was respected by everyone who worked with and for him.
In addition, Tom also had a number of jobs he took simply because he enjoyed doing them. These included working the Suncrest Golf Course and as a sales consultant at Norris Nursery in Butler.
He loved the outdoors and was an avid golfer, hunter and fly fisherman, but his favorite part was being able to do these things with friends and family. Tom also was a serious cyclist and a long-distance runner. He completed several marathons, including the Boston Marathon.
He was very active in the Cabot United Methodist Church, where he served on and chaired several committees. Tom was a welcoming soul often seen with a smile and an extended hand.
Tom really enjoyed spending time with his many friends and large extended family. He was especially fond of children and they all loved him. Rarely one to be serious, Tom saw and shared the bright and funny parts of his life with all of those he loved around him.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Teresa “Terry” Peters of Butler; his son, Tyler “T.J.” Peters of Greensburg; a sister, Sonie Mervis of Kittanning; and 10 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Larry.
Tom was a gentle, kind and good man and touched many, many people in his life. He lived his life by something he once said, “All I ever wanted to be in life was a good husband, a good father, a good son, a good brother and a good friend.” He was all of those things and much more.
The family would sincerely like to thank all of the competent, kind and truly caring people from the Good Samaritan Hospice at Concordia, Cabot.
