DETROIT — The Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled outfielder Gorkys Hernandez from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday.
To make room for Hernandez on the active roster, Pittsburgh optioned right-hander Evan Meek.
Four local teams will be competing in the District 9 baseball playoffs. They include:Class AAMoniteau (11-6) will play at Brookville (10-5) at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. The winner will face top-seeded Karns City (13-3) in the district title game May 29 at a time and site to be determined.Class AA-C Valley (9-8) will travel to Coudersport (11-4) for a 4:30 p.m. game Tuesday.Also at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Union (9-7) will battle Clarion (13-5) at Clarion County Park.Softball Class AAThe Moniteau softball team (13-7) will travel to face No. 2 seed Redbank Valley (13-4) at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.The winner will face top-seeded Cranberry at a site, time and date to be determined.

CONCORD, N.C. — Kyle Busch captured the pole for the Sprint All-Star race for the second straight year.Busch completed the unique three-lap qualifying that included a mandatory four-tire pit stop in 1 minute, 19.11 seconds.
