John Henry Steighner

John Henry Steighner, 85, of St. Augustine, Fla., and formerly of Butler, passed away peacefully on Friday at the Bailey Center of Hospice in St. Augustine, Fla.

John was born Feb. 16, 1927, in Butler, to John C. Steighner and Loretta Schnur Steighner, and was the last survivor of 11 children.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a pharmacist's mate third class. Afterward, John earned a B.S. in pharmacy from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. He went on to enjoy a long and successful career in pharmaceutical sales and management working for Upjohn, Merck and retiring from Novartis. In retirement, John volunteered at the Shriners Hospital in Tampa and later at the World Golf Village.

John is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sheila; two daughters, Kathleen Steighner of Rehoboth Beach, Del., and Ellen (Jerry) Allen of Dillsburg, Pa.; and two grandchildren, Derek Allen and Marissa Allen.

His son, Robert J. Steighner, preceded him in death.
