Maxine Elaine Brooks, 83, of Penn Township, Butler passed away at 5:10 p.m. Sunday in the VNA Inpatient Hospice, Butler.

She was born at home in Butler County on Oct. 29, 1928, to the late Loyal Walker and Hazel Pangborn Walker.

She was a member of the Nixon United Methodist Church. She retired in 1997 after 25 years as the executive secretary for the director of the VA Butler Medical Center. She worked occasionally for Carol Foster Associates helping with estate sales.

She was a member of NARFE, a former member of the Penn Township Woman's Club, and a member of the Butler Chapter 45 Order of the Eastern Star.

She loved sewing and cooking, especially baking Christmas cookies. She enjoyed canning at home and making homemade apple butter, caring for her yard and was proud to still be mowing grass on her riding mower. Fishing was a favorite hobby but spending time with her family was the highest priority and enjoyment she had.

Maxine was married to John S. Brooks on Aug. 27, 1948. He preceded her in death on June 10, 1997.

She is survived by three daughters, Karen Fleeger of Dillsburg, Pa., Melanie Green and her husband, Martin, of Dover, Pa., and Melissa Mahan and her husband, James, of Saxonburg; seven grandchildren, Sean Fleeger, Erika Benner, Katie Righter, Andrew Green, Stephanie Jimenez, Matthew Mahan and Jamie Mahan; a number of great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews; one sister, Cheryl Hilliard and her husband, Thomas, of Connoquenessing; and a very special friend and companion for the past 10 years, Harold Hilliard.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

Maxine will be greatly missed as the loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend that she was.

<B>BROOKS</B> — Friends of Maxine Elaine Brooks, who passed away Sunday, April 15, 2012 will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the <B>Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, </B>124 E. North St., Butler. Funeral services will be at the Nixon United Methodist Church, 334 Airport Road, Butler, at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Bruce K. Merritt officiating.
