PITTSBURGH — State Sen. Jane Orie's sentencing on corruption charges has been postponed two weeks while attorneys determine how much money she owes taxpayers who paid for part of her legal bills.

She had been scheduled to be sentenced May 21 but an Allegheny County judge on Monday delayed that hearing until June 4.

Orie, R-40th, was convicted on March 26 of 14 counts related to the misuse of her taxpayer-funded staff for campaign purposes.

Her district includes the southern section of Butler County.

Prosecutors said last week in a court filing that Orie could owe more than $1.3 million to taxpayers for legal costs.

Orie's attorney said in filings his client would resign her seat by May 21.

HARRISBURG — Former state House Democratic leader Bill DeWeese has begun his two-to-five-year prison term for corruption.Officials at Dauphin County Prison in Harrisburg say the former Greene County lawmaker reported at around 1 p.m. His next stop is expected to the Camp Hill State Prison, where he'll undergo several weeks of testing and assessment before he's assigned to a “home institution” within the prison system.DeWeese served in the House for 35 years, including two years as speaker.In February, a jury convicted the 62-year-old DeWeese of conspiracy, conflict of interest and three counts of theft for using public resources for political purposes.He remains on the Nov. 6 general-election ballot in his home district.
