A few random sports thoughts, observations ...
Time to do some spring cleaning in my brain (insert your jokes here, let’s move on):
• The WPIAL should rethink its team track playoff format. Having a team semifinal round seems like a waste of time.
The majority of the scores are blowouts in that round and teams on the short end pretty much know the outcome before they even show up.
Connellsville lost a dual 137-12, for goodness sake. And this is a team semifinal?
Gimmee a break.
Take the section team champions and have them run together in one meet to determine the overall team champ. The meet could be held the week before the individual qualifiers.
That way, the team finals wouldn’t be crammed into the same week as the qualifiers, like they are now.
• Pullman Park as the annual home of the PSAC Baseball Championships?
It could happen.
PSAC commissioner Steve Murray admitted to such a possibility down the road. The tourney will be played in Johnstown next year before returning here in 2014.
Murray suggested PSAC teams could run a Little League clinic locally on Tuesday, the night before the tournament, and offer Little Leaguers free admission to the games.
Nice thought. Here’s hoping it happens.
• Speaking of the PSAC Tournament, it missed the boat somewhat by playing the first-round Slippery Rock-West Chester game at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. That game pitted a local school against the Eastern Division champs.
Play that game in prime time and the crowd would have been much better.
• Former SRU slugger Matt Adams is pounding on the major leagues’ door. He is hitting .322 with four homers, seven doubles and 12 RBI for Class AAA Memphis in the St. Louis Cardinals’ organization. He leads the Memphis Redbirds in all of those offensive categories.
It’s only a matter of time.
• Does anyone still want to bash Pedro Alvarez? The Pirate brass showed incredible patience with him when no one else would.
If the Bucs’ pitching holds up and they can stay around .500, maybe they can hang around the top of a fairly weak division.
• Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin or Jordan Staal — apparently, the NHL’s salary cap structure is going to force the departure of one of these Penguins.
Crosby is the face of the league, Malkin is the league scoring champion and former playoff MVP, Staal one of the best two-way centers in the game.
Don’t look at me. I don’t have an answer for that doozy of a dilemma.
• The Steelers drafted talent over character. That shouldn’t be too much of a shock.
This proud franchise looked the other way when Ben Roethlisberger was getting into trouble off the field while trading trouble-finder Santonio Holmes — who was soon to be a free agent, of course.
Character is nice. Talent wins games — the cold reality of pro sports.
