SRU students, faculty protest proposed budget cuts

SLIPPERY ROCK — Students and faculty at Slippery Rock University staged a “flash mob” Tuesday to protest Gov. Tom Corbett’s education cuts in his proposed state budget.

The protest was organized by SRU’s Student Government Association and SRU’s Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties chapter.

Michael McCarter, an SGA senator who helped organize the protest, said the main point of the event was to raise awareness of education cuts.

“We’re just trying to get the word out,” McCarter said.

Earlier this year, Corbett proposed a state budget that reduced funding to state system schools by 20 percent. He did that because the state has a large deficit and he has pledged to not raise taxes to reduce the deficit.

“There will be less pie, so to speak,” McCarter said.

He said the way of life on school campuses could change for the worse because of the cuts.

“It’s in danger,” McCarter said.

SRU is one of 14 state system schools.

Between 12:15 and 12:30 p.m., students lay on the ground while professors handed out information on the budget cuts.

Patrick Burkhart, president of SRU’s APSCUF chapter, spent much of the protest speaking through a megaphone to passers-by.

He said people should tell politicians not to make cuts to education.
