SRU softball falls; baseball sweeps No. 23 Mercyhurst
Despite Jenna Geibel's eighth and ninth home runs of the season, the Slippery Rock University softball team fell to Edinboro 7-6 and 6-2 Saturday in PSAC-West action.
The losses eliminate SRU from conference playoff contention.
Geibel finished 5-for-8 and added three RBIs and three runs scored, Alyanna Beers added two hits and has reached base in nine consecutive games.
Geibel was 4-for-4 in the opener, the first four-hit performance by an SRU player this season.
SRU (13-16, 2-10) mustered just three hits in the nightcap, including a Geibel solo homer.
SRU swept 23rd-ranked host Mercyhurst 1-0, 5-3 — the latter game in eight innings — in a key PSAC-West matchup Saturday.The wins came less than 24 hours after Mercyhurst routed The Rock 10-0 and 19-6 Friday which snapped an eight-game SRU winning streak.Lou Trivino and John Kovalik had strong performances on the mound to key The Rock (20-19-1, 8-8). Trivino had 5X\c innings of no-hit ball and finished with a two-hitter to improve to 7-2 this season.In the nightcap, Kovalik came in to relief in the third inning of a 3-all game and limited the Lakers (28-11, 10-6) to two hits over the final six innings.In the opener, Derek Carr led off with a single, stole second and scored on John Shaffer's single, which proved to be the lone run of the game.In the second game, Austin Benshadle drew a one-out walk in the eighth inning and stole second. Kyle Schneider, who came in to pinch-run, then advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Carr.
Hunter Williams (Seneca Valley) won the 400 (49.31) and was third in the 200 (22.78) to highlight the men's team's nine victories at the Dave Labor Invitational Saturday.Theodore Reynolds (10K, 33:56.07), Dan Hedlgen (110 hurdles, 15.46), Trevor Foley (400 hurdles, 53.56), the 1,600 relay team (3:18.99, which included Williams, Ethan Geisler (Slippery Rock) and Mason McLaughlin (Butler), Joseph Kelly (hammer throw, 50.58 meters), Chad Noce (shot put, 15.83 meters), Sam Lotz (Slippery Rock, triple jump, 12.79 meters) and David Caldwell (Slippery Rock, pole vault, 4.30 meters) also captured first place.In the women's meet, SRU grabbed eight first-place honors: Jamie Rylands (high jump, 1.57 meters), Sandy Kakraba (triple jump, 10.60 meters; shot put, 12.50 meters), Brittany Christiansen (hammer throw, 48.45 meters), Lexi Arnold (javelin, 41.05), Katelyn Wetzel (Butler High, 100, 12.82 seconds), Stephanie Turak (1,500, 5:120.99) and Jordan Hausladen (5K, 19:13.89).
Holly Webb had four goals, Amy Halls had three goals and three assists, and Morgan Pettit three goals and two assists to power SRU to a 22-13 triumph over Shepherd Sunday.The Rock (8-4), winners of three consecutive contests, tallied 17 first-half goals to take a 17-6 lead.
Sarah Lynch, Dunja Drmac, Elizabeth Yetiskul, Lauren Coggins, Janelle Krantz and Samantha Bruggeman also won singles matches and teamed together for all three doubles wins in a 9-0 blanking over West Virginia Wesleyan Saturday at the Bloomsburg Duals.
