SRU streak ends at 8
SLIPPERY ROCK — The streak is over.
The Slippery Rock University baseball team entered Friday’s doubleheader against No. 23-ranked Mercyhurst University at Critchfield Park on an eight-game winning streak.
But Mercyhurst out-hit The Rock (18--19, 6-8) 28-12 in the two games and SRU suffered a sweep at the hands of the Lakers, 10-0 and 19-6.
First baseman John Shaffer had two of the Rock’s four hits in the first game, but Mercyhurst (27-9, 10-4) banged out 11 hits in the win.
Shane Latshaw hit for the cycle for the Lakers and also drove in two runs.
Latshaw finished the doubleheader 6-for-7 with four runs scored.
Eric Aschley tossed a shutout for Mercyhurst, striking out six and walking three.
Mercyhurst had 17 hits in the nightcap. Will Kengor and Austin Benshadle had two hits for The Rock.
