Orie loses seat under reapportionment plan
HARRISBURG — The state Senate seat held by Jane Orie would be moved across the state under a redistricting plan that has won preliminary approval.
The Legislative Reapportionment Commission voted 4-to-1 today in favor of the proposal put forward by the chairman, appellate judge Stephen McEwen.
It moves Republican Orie’s district to fast-growing Monroe County in far eastern Pennsylvania. The Senate’s Republican leader had sought to move the district held by Democratic Sen. Jim Brewster.
The vote puts the preliminary plan out for a month of public comment. The lone “no” vote was cast by Senate Democratic Leader Jay Costa.
Orie is awaiting sentencing in May after being convicted of using her state-paid staff for political work.
Reapportionment occurs every decade to account for population shifts.
