Butler board discusses cost saving measures
BUTLER TWP — Analyses show the Butler School District could save as much as $2.26 million in salaries if 30 potential retirees are not replaced.
However, the district still would have a $2.8 million deficit for next year, even if property taxes go up two mills.
That scenario was one of three distributed Tuesday at the Butler School Board meeting where board members discussed strategies to cut the $6.4 million deficit in the proposed 2012-13 budget.
The district is counting on savings in salaries to balance its projected $94 million budget, which would be up from $90.4 million this year.
The district’s analyses include a potential two mill property tax increase, which would boost its millage rate from 89.8 mills to 91.8 mills.
If half the potential retirees are replaced, the district would save about $1.3 million in salaries, leaving a $3.76 million deficit, said Cathy Rodgers, director of business services.
If all 30 potential retirees are replaced with lower earning employees, the district would save about $732,000 in salaries and have a $4.3 million deficit.
