DIMOCK — Federal environmental regulators say testing at 20 homes in a northeastern Pennsylvania village where a gas driller was accused of polluting the aquifer showed no dangerous levels of water contamination.

The report released Friday by the Environmental Protection Agency shows the presence of substances including barium, methane and sodium in several of the Dimock, Susquehanna County wells tested, but nothing requiring the EPA to take immediate action.

Earlier testing showed the presence of sodium, methane, chromium or bacteria in six other wells.

PITTSBURGH — Volunteers will plant hybrid American chestnuts on 20 acres of the Flight 93 Memorial later this month as part of a project to reintroduce the trees that were nearly wiped out by blight over the last century.The planting at the Somerset County site is part of a broader effort to reforest hundreds of thousands of acres cleared by surface mining.The Appalachian Regional Reforestation Initiative is partnering with the American Chestnut Foundation to put blight-resistant varieties of the once-thriving trees in former surfacing mining sites from Pennsylvania to Alabama.The hybrid trees are a result of cross-breeding the domestic variety with blight-resistant Chinese chestnuts.

WEST HOMESTEAD — Police say an elderly woman has been struck and killed by a vehicle near a large Pittsburgh-area shopping and entertainment complex.The incident was reported shortly after 6 a.m. Friday near the Eat ‘N’ Park restaurant at The Waterfront.The complex, built on the site of a former steel mill, is patrolled by police from West Homestead, Homestead and Munhall.The medical examiner’s office has identified the woman as 73-year-old Ludmilla Kondrashov of Homestead.Police remained on the scene to investigate and question the driver, who has not been charged.
