Shaler Elementary remains closed after air duct collapse
GLENSHAW — Shaler Elementary School remains closed today, a day after an air duct collapsed in a cafeteria, injuring eight students and four adult faculty members.
Seven of the children were treated at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, where three remained this morning, two in good condition and the third in fair condition. Two of the adults were treated at another hospital, but their conditions were not immediately available.
Shaler Elementary has about 1,400 students in fourth through sixth grades. The duct collapsed onto a table where fourth graders were eating lunch about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, trapping some of the children underneath.
Shaler Township police were investigating the collapse along with forensic and mechanical engineers.
The district has also closed two high school gymnasiums so similar duct work in those buildings could be inspected.
